Restocking Day

After a false start over the weekend where I straight up chickened out of going to buy eggs, the day was here. Grocery day! The first time in twelve days that I’d struck out to forage for food at my local Walmart. I was hoping to stretch it to fourteen days but the lack of eggs drew me out. I guess I just didn’t want the fortnight inside title bad enough. I woke up way too early as planned and did some Duolingo to pass the time. I made my list and checked it twice before heading out. This is a new process in quarantine, I wander my house and checks first the upstairs cupboards then head to kitchen and check on my supplies. I then go to Walmart about twenty minutes early to wait to get in line to enter the store. This day however, I left even earlier and got my mail and a McDonald’s breakfast. I spent the waiting time reading my mail and eating in my truck before wandering up to the line. Except there was no line. Usually non-seniors have to wait outside until 8am. The store being reserved for seniors for the first hour of business. The security guard waved me in though and I shot straight to the eggs, the priority of this excursion.

With the success of the journey guaranteed now, I settled in to enjoy my experience. I was armed with my Clorox wipe and following the taped arrows on the floors while respecting the lines marking six foot intervals down the aisles. I got some strange looks from the old people milling about but I was waved in so didn’t care. I checked everything off my list except for the ever elusive sausage rounds. A rare treasure even before a global pandemic squeezed the supply chain. My last three shopping trips have been declining steadily in expenditure. $267.40 down to $186.21 to $140.62 today. My average shopping trip is generally between $80-$100. My slow stockpiling seems to be working. Much better than the fools that jumped completely off the deep end at the start. One thing that rattled my roost was that I saw plenty of people checking out and only buying a half dozen items. Why wouldn’t you wait until you are in need and make the trip worthwhile like I have been. Limit your risk to exposure by limiting your trips to the store. Not my business maybe but it still crossed my hot buns. In the end, my cupboards are back to full and I might hunt the fortnight level this next round.
