Corn Tour Day 8
I woke and showered again to make sure it had taken. Out of habit I re-packed my bag and got it ready for departure. I ate too large of a breakfast, feeling empty from the previous day. This would factor into things later on. I met Double B before 7am and we were off towards Quebec City. We had to cross the river where the bridges afforded us the opportunity but we managed to get a couple of sites in before noon despite the two hour drive. We stopped at our usual spot, Chez Ashton, on the journey. This was the location of the infamous "beverage" incident. This time I took in what Double B ordered and chimed in en Francais, same thing. The old, I'll have what he's having trick. We got the double cheeseburger with a "baby sized" Poutine Dulton. There was so much meat! I was getting the sweats when we were done, don't forget the huge breakfast. I had to request a pit stop on the way to the next site, it could have gotten ugly. We ended up looking at four locations before heading back to Double B's research farm. We spent some time going through one of the sets he had there before calling it a day. It was a long day, we had a lot of good conversation and saw some nice corn trials. It took me most of the trip but we did find some corn that had reached physiological maturity, as called Black Layer. I got dropped off at the hotel around seven bells and cleaned up.
I decided to be a little more bold this time. My French is almost passable so I wanted to see if I could handle myself. Usually when I'm in Quebec I have a colleague with me to bail me out if I say or do something stupid. Tonight would be my first solo adventure. I picked the closest place to the hotel, Scores -Chicken and Ribs. I was able to get seated and was asked if I was English. I had to admit I was but decided to forge ahead in uncertain French anyways. I was able to read the menu and soon had my choice. I would get the Scores combo which was a sample of four of their appetizers and the General Tao poutine for my meal. I also ordered a Heineken. This was going to be the last night on the road so I figured I'd go for it. It was a very filling meal and I stuffed it all in, paid and thanked the server in French and hobbled back to the hotel and to the most familiar bed I'd seen in a week.
