Corn Tour Day 7
The day of rest did not turn out that way. It was actually a busy and pretty terrible day. The Beer Guy and I woke up in a strange place and quickly thanked our hosts and got moving. I walked back to my truck to drop my stuff before heading to the site to aid in clean up. This was part of the arrangement that saw me get in for free. We spent a couple of sweaty hours sorting and stacking empties, cleaning up dishes and sweeping the venue. It was very warm out and we both sported a minor hangover. This was not a recipe for easy living. We found Chef Brown and headed for a local eatery mid morning. Not surprisingly, it was jam packed so we decided to head down the highway to find an alternative. I confused the exits and started brushing my teeth as we approached what I thought was our exit. I ended up with a mouth full of toothpaste for another ten minutes. Again, not an ideal hangover activity. We arrived and found service to be extremely slow. The food was quite good though, so feeling pretty neutral about that place. We three parted ways at this point and I went to the fuel depot to load up on drinks and fuel. I again used my tools to get to the first corn site of the day, arriving shortly after noon. It was so hot that I could only handle being in the corn for 10-12 plots at a time then would have to retreat to the truck to cool down. I was sweating profusely, just oozing booze. I was a smelly wreck of a man. There was a nature calls fiasco as well but I won't get into the details of that. It took me at least twice as long as it should have to work through that site but eventually I moved on. Later I would find out that I missed a whole test there but that's okay, I'll survive.
I shared my concerns with some of my friends.
I drove in the cool confines of the truck down to my second and final location to evaluate. It took me two tries to actually find the entry way into the field. I recognized the farm right away from the legend. I refer to it as haunted but the actual story is much more tragic. It is being fixed up now and is on the market for new owners. I took a photo of the realtor's sign as I found her to be quite striking. There were two sets at this location and it took me over an hour each to walk through, which included several AC breaks again. The sun was beginning to set by the time I wrapped it up. By the chime of the six bells I was continuing my journey.
The last leg of the day's trip was to get to my hotel in St-Hyacinthe, QC. I again chose to stay at the Holiday Inn Express for similiar reasons as I mentioned on the Western leg of my adventure. I dropped off my backpack, still just working with a backpack, and went in search of sustenance. That brunch was now well behind me. I decided to go safe and walked to a Subway across the plaza. Luckily the sandwich artist spoke decent English and things went smooth. I ate my soup and sandwich then headed for a hot shower. What I didn't realize when walking through the corn, it was covered in a fungus called Common Rust. This meant that I was covered in the brown spores. It made my skin appear several shades darker than normal. It was a very messy shower but I came out clean on the other side and I managed to make sure I didn't destroy the bathroom. After all, this was going to be the first bed I'd sleep in two nights in a row since the adventure began. It wasn't long until I was sawing logs and recooperating from the long day in the sun.
