Corn Tour Day 4
This was the last day of the Western leg of my tour. I woke up with some excitement around that but also feeling like I was just getting started. I got all packed up and ready for my flight before heading to the complimentary continental breakfast. I'm not sure what that normally implies but at this venue, in a cinder block room at that back that likely once housed supplies for the hotel pool were three containers of cereal and a fridge. The cereal were Corn Flakes, Raisin Bran, and Cheerios. There was no milk. There were several empty bags that maybe held bread at one point. There was no toaster. There was a rack that could have been used for muffins but there were none. It was the most pathetic excuse for breakfast I'd ever encountered. My colleague, Mr Smith picked me up, shocked and dismayed that I'd stayed there. We stopped for McBreakfast thankfully before going to the first stop. This was another function's site but we had permission to walk it. We hit another one of their sites before arriving at Mr Smith's research farm. There we met up with our boss and the head of marketing. She was there to take notes and photos for some future use. I suspect she was trying to steal some of my knowledge but I'm not sure how or for why yet. We walked the commercial plots before looking at the new stuff before lunch. We dined at the spot in closest town, where my colleague and his assistant with a great name are regulars. The waiter apparently is legendary for his lack of words. Often just pointing at the menus. My presence must have calmed him because he spoke more that day than they'd ever heard before or since! We ate quickly and drove on to the next field. There was a lot to see here and we crossed paths with yet another of Dewy's colleagues. She was very excitable and went quickly through several sets of material. It was all becoming somewhat routine for me. We left our boss and the agronomist at the end of this site and struck off for the airport so I'd make my 6pm flight back to the Smoke. We had a great discussion on the way and light was shed on many things. Mr Smith is new to the role so was full of questions about many topics that I tried my best to help him with. I decided to skip dinner at the airport and got to my gate in good time. Despite checking in to the flight well in advance and having my boarding pass on my phone, I was again saddled with a middle seat. This time the plane was much older and there was very little leg room. My knees would become familiar with the hinge for the tray table on this one. The woman on the aisle side mercifully had a friend across the way and was hanging out in the aisle talking to her much of the flight. The other side had a very attractive older woman. She was super shifty the entire flight and even had to get up once. When she did, she left the armrest up and when she got back she flailing around again but I'd lost my barrier. If she'd not had a giant rock on her hand I'd have half expected she was up to something nefarious, as all men would. There was no entertainment save for the podcasts I'd astutely downloaded at the gate. I'm glad for that, otherwise it would have just been two and half hours of being uncomfortable without the enjoyment of My Dad Wrote a Porno. I landed and had the long trek and train ride back to my truck then a drive back to my house. I got home fairly late but was happy to be back in my own bed.
