Corn Tour Day 3
The other part of why I chose the Comfort Inn was that it had a breakfast option. We opted out and instead decided to meet a colleague of Dewy's, ABL, for food at the local greasy spoon. It was a tremendous breakfast if memory serves, complete with more coffee than was appropriate for me. We three drove over to the Brandon research farm and met up with my colleague in the area and her assistant. I don't know her well enough to come up with a fun name to shield her identity unfortunately. Makes me feel kinda bad. Anyways, we walked through her corn at the site and then embarked to visit a couple more MD plots that ABL had put together. At the second one we met the grower and spent a good deal of time discussing things. We still had two more sites to see of my unnamed colleague's. We had some gas station Quizno's and hit the two sites. They looked really good. I'm not sure if that was just a factor of what the corn looked like the day before or if it was that impressive. They did have more heat that Onterrible so I'm thinking it's good corn.
In discussing with Dewy the day before I'd learned that he had to be back in Regina early the next day for a presentation to school kids about agriculture but was still planning to drive me to my next stop. I had only decided the previous day where I'd make nightfall and still had to book my hotel. I decided I had to ask my unnamed colleague if she would drive me. And if it would be putting her out. It was uncomfortable to ask. She said it was no problem and I was able to release Dewy from his offer so he could get several additional hours of sleep. We had one more stop, at a double plot with another of Dewy's colleague's Double R. This plot featured silage and grain corn and was obviously one of his best spots. The corn was nice at all the sites and I got some excellent notes. I learned a lot about this developing corn market throughout the day and in summation, it was a very valuable day. I rode with my unnamed colleague and we had some great discussion along the way. I shared a bunch of files with her to increase efficiency in her program. I'm hoping they try on some of the boring procedural things I suggested, time will tell. She delivered me to my hotel, the Days Inn in Portage la Prairie, MB. Firstly, it was not at all where I had expected, and was weird from the moment I stepped in the door. I thought I was booking a spot on the strip, near all the restaurants and amenities, instead it was isolated on a secondary highway. It did feature it's own food option. Most of the bar area was filled with a now drunken road crew, blowing off some steam, and dollars. There was a pool, and the rooms were mostly off the pool, or so I thought. I was in a different wing as my card didn't open room 105 as was expected. It was strange, I can't say much more than that. I ate there, it was adequate. I got the clubhouse, as per my tradition for new spots. I retired to my room and locked the door tight. I found out the next day that the night before I arrived there were stabbings and deaths. The police investigation had wrapped up and left earlier in the day before I arrived. So not the best choice. I had a great sleep however.
