Road Minds

Yesterday was neat. We ended up getting more rain that we expected and were unable to plant anything so we saw to a lot of preparation. We lined up a lot of stuff that should allow us to more easily complete our missions. I had to duck out early to help my old boss with a project we hired him back to spearhead. It involved me weighing soil samples in my basement with him for several hours. We proceeded to have a nice visit afterwards topped off with some of my rare Irish whiskey. Solid afternoon. I had some thoughts on the way to work this morning. I was early after rising much earlier than necessary and wasn't in much of a hurry on the roads. I was going an appropriate speed, not too slow, not too fast, right in the Goldilocks zone. The fella behind me I guess felt I was holding him up. He was riding my ass, really on my bumper. If I can't see your headlamps and you are in a truck then you are too close. I casually let off the gas a bit more so he'd realize he was getting too close and maybe ease off some. He did not. Then after a short distance he turned off into a business. It made me realize that everyone has a different state of mind and are in their own little worlds within their vehicles. Maybe they are rushing to get to their niece's recital or are just out for a drive and slowly cruising around. Or running errands and have to get home to met the kids off the bus but took too long fretting over whether or not to buy that yellow dress, does it go with my complexion, can I pull off a sundress, is $40 worth it? Or they work hourly and aren't in any kind of a hurry at all to get back to the county road maintenance office to do anything else but work. Each person has something unique going on and that is just why they are on the road, there is also what their mood is. Maybe their day has been horrible and they are taking out their frustration on the road, super irritable and angry. Maybe they just got dumped or found out they are being cheated on and their mind continually wanders, leaving driving as a secondary focus. It's interesting, as you pass people by on the roads, to wonder what is going on within their bubble. Are they wondering what is happening within my doors and windows? Not likely, people are mostly selfish. So next time you're touring around and someone is driving like an idiot think about what kind of day they are having or why they might do that. Chances are that they're a good person and are having a bad day. Or, they could just be a jerk, they still exist. Either way, consider the other person behind the wheel, not just your own bubble. Sermon over.
