Storm is Rolling In
Today was another day where the energy level was not where I would expect at this time of year. There is no overall panic yet but everyone is running around in a panic. We're not yet May and we nearly have all we need to begin the season. It is interesting that we haven't seemed to freak out just yet. Yesterday was a similar day. We worked on the extra project that we dislike for most of the afternoon. I just want it to go away but that is not how this works. Things were interesting and rushed as well yesterday. I started two fresh students in the morning. I tried to run them through an orientation, a task I have not had to perform in many years. This is a perk of having returning help year after year. It is much more time consuming than I remembered and things were not smooth. One truck decided it didn't need to run anymore and a computer for the other one felt that connection was not critical enough to bother with. Nothing is perfect though and I will overcome these small hurdles in short order. The weather bought me a few more days as well, rain over night means that we won't be planting until late in the week at the earliest. It is the bonus work that is sucking up all the preparation time. I don't see that going away as more and more growers start into their springs this week. I feel like we'll have several more fields to take samples from in the near term. Now that all the seed has nearly arrived I can finally start to focus on building my boxes out and getting everything ready to plant. We're probably about a third of the way ready to make it happen. I haven't started to panic yet but all the panic swirling around me has definitely put me on edge, I find myself throughout the day having to take a moment to breathe and realize that there is time. I can't afford to get caught up in the frenzy. If we can finish our preparations this week and be ready for next week I feel like we're in an excellent spot. You will also have noticed that my posting has begun to slow. With delays in between fevered bouts of posts. This won't go away for awhile. The spring is the most crucial time in my business. You can't reap what you don't sow they say, and if you're taking ratings in the interim then it's even worse. I'm really trying to ensure that I'm ready for it by sleeping longer at night and stretching and exercising through the day. The last piece of the puzzle is diet. I have to get that squared away. Part of the issue is my shopping problems but I'll get more into that later. For now enjoy the calm, for the storm looms.
