Tent-Venture - Episode 4

I’m posting the following journey undertaken by my friend Theodore Complete on their behalf.

Tent-venture - Episode 4

Day 25 - Sunday Sept 13

Delilah - Day 25 from sprout

Sadie - Day 7 from sprout

I mixed up the soil for the 5 gallon felt pot I want Sadie in. No real plan, just trying to use what I have lying around.

  • 1 part seedling starter bag (mostly peat moss)

  • 1 part cow manure

  • 2 parts Hydro grow mix (finished the bag)

  • 1 part perlite

  • 4 parts pro mix

I’ll leave the pot in my shed until I’m ready to transplant, I’ll see how the next week goes before I do that.

I also pH tested my water in the bottle and it had drifted up past 7.4 pH! I added 1 ml of pH down and it settled on 6.1. I’ll have to recheck this more often, good lesson. I spritzed with the new water.

Delilah is plugging away slowly.

Sadie is shooting along well too.

Day 26

Applied water

Day 27

A bit of planned neglect to let them dry a bit

Delilah is continuing to grow slowly. I’m going to let her dry out for a few days to try and make her roots expand.

Sadie is plugging away nicely as well.

Day 28 (Wednesday)

The dry souls amendment I ordered arrived. I’m going to mix this in with the soil for Sadie and occasionally top-dress during the grow.

The package recommends 2 tbsp per gallon of grow medium. That would mean 10 for the 5 gallon pot but I’ll do 8 because it’s not filled all the way up.

I checked the pH on my water and it came out looking scuzzy with some weird sediment so I poured it out and did up another batch to feed with.

Delilah has grown about 2 centimetres.

Sadie has grown 4. A bit precocious. I think I’ll have to accelerate the repotting a bit.

Day 29 (Thursday)

Sadie’s roots are peeking out of the bottom of the container so I started gearing up to transplant.

I brought the 5 gallon pot inside from the shed to warm up in the tent for a while first; the temperatures have been close to zero in the mornings and it was out in the shed.

The root ball was well formed and transplant went well. I did another crack at Low stress training too, then gave it some water and will leave it be for a few days to recover.

One thing is for sure - that soil additive smells bad.

Day 30-31

Just gave a bit of water and otherwise left alone.
