Storm Cooking

Light on sleep again. The trend continues. I don’t want to say it’s been this way since the playoffs started but the dates line up pretty close. I’m sure the two things are unrelated, the whole correlation/causation phenomenon that people don’t understand but it is fun to insinuate. I woke up to some messages from my family and a photo from the Big T of his perogie breakfast. It has been a long standing tradition in our household that he makes perogies on Sunday morning. I’ve continued it on my own, eating way too many on the Sundays I actually remember to do it. I took his photo as inspiration and decided I would try and do it different and maybe a bit better if I could. His method is to dump the frozen sack of perogies into a pan with some cooking bacon and onions and finish them all together. Because of my long standing hatred of onions I have always done mine different. I generally cook my bacon and drain the pan then dump the frozen nuggets in. I’ve tried grease in too. Either way it takes longer that way. The boil before the pan method is quicker so I decided to try that to be different. Since I had dusted off the video gear, I taped this adventure too and made a much tighter video. I guess a less complicated meal allows for that also. Here is a photo of the end product. The outside was crispy but not rigid like cooking from frozen and the middle was like biting into a flavour pillow. The gooey cheese was a nice touch too and the hot sauce gave it a pleasant zip against the savoury nuggets. Crispy bacon for some more texture and also bacon is fantastic.

While I was preparing this feast a storm started. I thought it was unforecasted but it turns out I was looking at the forecast for back home and not for the Harbour. I didn’t stop cooking at breakfast and had some other things going at the same time. Looking back I wonder if my cooking up a storm spilled over to create an actual storm. Probably. While I was making the perogies I had some chicken cooking away in the Instant Pot for planned use in the day’s dinner. I made a tray of Rice Crispies as well for good measure. I’ll talk about that supper plan after the jump. The storm continues to rage all morning and provided enough rain that I didn’t need to water the plants outside which is always a blessing. As I was finishing cleaning up the kitchen Ron reached out and asked for a match of C&C which I happily obliged him in. We tried to take on four opponents on the same team and failed so we played three and it took us 42 minutes but we were triumphant. It was fun. We chatted sparingly, both intent on what we were doing. As the match ended I got a call from Admiral Bonesaw. I’d asked him some questions the previous day and he and Dutchie were driving into the city, the first break from their newly adopted girls. We chatted for the better part of an hour before they got to their destination. I had another bowl of perogies after that was wrapped up. It was a meager but tasty lunch.

Following lunch I finished editing the perogie video and filmed and edited for another video that I won’t talk much about. I had to touch up a couple of things on my computer for these videos, including turning off the comments. I don’t monitor them and mostly the ones I get are for porn sites or other scams so I figure if I turn them off then I’ll be fine. I’m sure my ten subscribers won’t mind. While I was on the computer I set about trying to pull the photos off my phone. The pictures worked fine but getting video off an iPhone is horrible. Apparently Apple has set file size limits on what you can take off the phone, even with a USB cord. I read in enough random forums that it is 15MB, anything larger doesn’t work. But I had several larger files work. So I was furstrated and perplexed. I spent three hours in this battle and in the end came away mostly beated. There are still thirty something videos on the phone that I can’t get transfer. I’ll have to think of something else to make sense of it. I might have to breakdown and use a third party app which I was trying to avoid because I don’t trust apps.

Anyways, I had planned to make my classic Tugboat pad thai for supper with the chicken I made earlier but lacked the time and the sunny disposition to take it on. I warmed up a large bowl of the pasta from the previous day and chugged that before getting ready for the big game. I elected to watch it on the small screen and after the first few minutes I started checking out. I was paying 2/3 attention by the end of the first and I passed out completely in the second intermission. I woke up hours later to a dead iPad and a pool of drool. I guess all those nights of low sleep finally caught up with me. They predictably lost in frustrating fashion. They worked hard, right to the end from what I’m told, but managed to disprove the old addage of a good offense beats a good defense. Not the case here. It will be interesting to see what they do in this weird off-season. The weekend overall flew by and I kept myself more than busy for most of it. This is in stark contrast to my usual motif, we’ll see how it carries into the week.
