Family Day

I think it is time for a bit of a rant! Today's topic? Family Day. This is a made up holiday that is only a few years old. I missed all the fanfare and the basic why of it all but I was able to cobble together what happened through personal inferences and opinion rather than fact or knowledge. As it should be right, since it was the guvmint who dreamed this thing up? Basically, other provinces had a go to holiday for this day. It was becoming inconvenient for the West to be rocking Louie Riel Day to celebrate their Metis heritage. I'm told PEI was doing a day about being from an island as well. So with some of the provinces doing their own thing, our national wisdom decided to fabricate a holiday. I guess it was too long of a stretch in a super depressing time of the year to not have a day off. So they created a day called family day which is not actually a federal holiday and as such most federal employees have to work. Don't worry, they get it all back with interest in other ways. So this fake holiday that is mostly celebrated was today. It is meant for families to huddle together around the hearth and enjoy a good winter's fire after a long day of sledding and pond hockey or anything else super Canadian that the government imagines that it's families do. My family lives all over and my parents are six hours away. Hardly convenient to pop in on. As I mentioned, it was their anniversary this weekend as well so I felt they deserved their privacy. From my perch on the outside then I can see a few results of this holiday. One, I get a day off, which I'm not complaining about. Two, there is a huge volume of extra travel that takes place on this weekend that normally wouldn't happen, well not until Easter weekend anyways, so a nice little shot in the arm to our terrible economy. By the way, did you know that we are and have been in a recession for the last year and a bit. Funny how they don't talk about that in the news. I guess they don't have any scapegoats to drop it on like when the US fudged things up last time. This time just appears to be from our crappy spending, looking at you especially Ontario Liberals, who are sinking the whole country now. But I don't want to get political, I just want to mindlessly vent about subjects I don't even have a basic understanding for like a lunatic in the street. Isn't that what internet blogs are for? I'm not in my mother's basement though, I'm well above the ground in a building I own myself, so I guess I'm not typical enough to get wild and crazy. So I'll just whimper out of this post by saying that I had a good, quiet, private Family Day. Mostly spent wasting my life at this and that. I ate poorly and exercised minimally. Basically the same as any non-work day. I'm thankful for that, even if I don't believe in why I got it off. That's what she said....
