Freaky Friday

I was home before it got too dark tonight. It feels weird to have gotten a site off and also planted a wheat trial and still be home in time to do anything. It was an added bonus as I get to watch the Jays game tonight. It is starting soon and I should call my parents before it gets going. They recently returned from a long visit with my sister. They would call me if I went on a trip. To know how it went, were there issues, and then ask about my meals. I'm assuming if I talk to the T he'll give me a meal by meal account of his trip. I think he measures time solely by the meals he had. It's uncanny. But yea, being home before 8pm is a rare treat, so much so, that I barely know what to do with myself. Hockey is back too. This new kid is Toronto did some stuff, has everyone in an uproar about it. I'm excited but as usual my enthusiasm is muted, primarily due to past disappointments. I'm too fragile to be hurt again by these Toronto sports franchises. They are excellent at cultivating hope and then dashing it at the last minute. The visual that comes to mind is a child and its parent meticulously constructing a sand castle on the sea shore. Well up from the waves, but close enough to have that mold-able wet sand. They build turrets and walls, smoothed with their hands and their pails. Elaborate spires tower up over the grainy sand below. Then just before it's done; they smash it to pieces! That is what it feels like to me to be a Toronto sports fan. It wasn't always like this. In the past it was an accomplishment just to make the playoffs and you could be satisfied with just that. But once they've done it a few times you want more. You get greedy and feel entitled about the whole thing. Except for two years earlier in my life, the smashing always occurs. It's pretty cynical to expect it each year but sadly, that cynicism is almost hardwired in now. I'm hoping they can smash that this time around instead of the hope. That's why you have to watch, that's why it's so compelling. So I'll be hunkered down in front of the TV to see what gets smashed this time around. Where will you be?
